Home Brewing BeerIt was in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt where home brewing beer was first practiced.  In fact, whenever and wherever you consume homemade beer, you are partaking of humanity’s oldest and the world’s most popular alcoholic beverage.

Beer’s Common Ingredients

In earlier times of home brewing beer, the availability of ingredients in the particular area often determined the beer’s character. Nowadays, ingredients can be purchased at brick-and-mortar stores and online sites specializing in providing kits and supplies for homemade beer.  Thus, you probably will not have problems in procuring the basic ingredients to make your own brand.

Water is the most important ingredient, obviously.  You can either improve the water quality through various water treatments like burtonisation or the addition of a Campden tablet or you can just purchase distilled/purified water.

Malted grain provides the starch that primarily determines the beer’s strength and flavor.  You have a choice of barley, wheat, rice, oats, and rye, corn and sorghum as malted grains though barley is the most used because of its fibrous husk.  Hops, on the other hand, are used for their flavoring and preserving qualities.  You can either choose whole hops or hop oil depending on your preference.

Of course, the presence of yeast cannot be forgotten.  This is, after all, responsible for beer’s fermentation.  It is recommended that yeast culture is added instead of waiting for wild yeast to infest the brew for timesaving and sanitation purposes.  With these store-bought ingredients, beer kits and supplies, beer recipes, time and patience, you too can engage in home brewing beer

Useful Tips

However, before you set about engaging in home brewing beer activities, you have to remember these useful tips.  This way, you can come up with homemade beer that rivals the best in the business while expressing your personality and preferences.

First, you have to maintain excellent sanitation at all times.  You can buy sanitizers to sterilize your beer supplies like bottles, lids, and vessels simply because you do not want undesirable bacteria to enter your brew.  Otherwise, you will end up with liquid akin to vinegar.

Second, you have to use purified or distilled water.  Never ever use tap water, chlorinated water and untreated water because you will end up with nasty flavors no man should ever be made to drink.

Third, and which chefs will wholeheartedly agree, always use fresh ingredients.  Always check for expiration dates and look out for stale characteristics.  Don’t worry because you will have practice in this area.

Fourth, use the appropriate yeast for your desired beer style.  You will appreciate the differences once your homemade beer touches your tongue.

Fifth and most important, always keep a detailed record of your beer recipes for future reference.  It also helps to use brewing software to help formulate recipes to perfection; at the very least, you save time from all those calculations.

Through all the things that you have to perform, just always keep in mind that home brewing beer can be a rewarding activity especially when you start winning smiles and homebrew competitions.

Brewing your own beer is easier with an all inclusive starter kit.
